The Sacramento Alliance to Prevent AIDS (SAPA) is composed of interdisciplinary members working toward preventing the spread of HIV in Sacramento County. SAPA offers input to the County's HIV/Communicable Disease Prevention Program for their decision making process. SAPA contributes to effective programs that are responsive to community needs, and it provides a forum to ensure integration of evidences based information, such as epidemiological data, with programmatic expertise and perspectives from affected communities.

How Can I Join SAPA?

The Leadership Council members are selected by the Public Health Advisory Board and confirmed by the Sacramento Board of Supervisors. All other interested individuals are encouraged to attend SAPA Leadership Council meetings as part of the General Membership. General Members received mailing to be kept abreast of community events related to HIV/AIDS and can participate in meetings, however, they may not vote.

How Does SAPA Function?

Two co-chairs and a Secretary/Parliamentarian help to ensure the purpose and goals of SAPA are always considered. In December 2005, Peter Simpson was re-elected to serve as Community co-chair. He facilitates the meetings with the County co-chair, Staci Syas.  In addition, Steve Purcell was re-elected to serve as Secretary/Parliamentarian. Elections are held every year for co-chair and Secretary/Parliamentarian positions.

What Subcommittees Can I Join?

Since HIV/AIDS education and prevention is complicated work, SAPA has several subcommittees. New members are always welcomed at the monthly SAPA subcommittee meetings and the quarterly Leadership Council meetings. Subcommittee members need not be Leadership Council members.
