The High Risk Infant Follow-Up (HRIF) Program is a screening/diagnostic program that provides special services that are often difficult to obtain in the community.
The HRIF program is for "graduates" from a CCS approved neonatal intensive care unit that are at-risk for needing MTU services. Financial eligibility may be waived for HRIF patients under certain circumstances.
Infants discharged from a CCS approved NICU without a CCS eligible condition but who continue to be at-risk for developing a CCS eligible condition (usually cerebral palsy) may be followed until two years of age (corrected for prematurity) if they have any one of the following:
- Birthweight < 1500 grams.
- Cardiorespiratory depression at birth (e.g., Apgar scores of 0-3 at five minutes, hypotonia persisting to two hours of age).
- Perinatal hypoxemia/acidemia, neonatal hypoglycemia, or repetitive apnea.
- Assisted ventilation > 48 hours in the first 28 days of life or any duration on ECMO.
- Documented intracranial abnormality or pathology (e.g., intraventricular hemorrhage of grade 2 or higher, cerebral infarction, periventricular leukomalacia).
- Other potential neurologic problems (e.g., history of seizure activity, CNS infection, documented sepsis, bilirubin in excess of usual exchange transfusion level).
