Medical Nutrition Therapy
for Sacramento County Residents
Sacramento County serves an array of specific groups that need Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT). Dietitians and nutrition assistants in the Women, Infants and Children Nutrition Program (WIC), provide nutrition education and food assistance to low-income pregnant women and parents of young children, helping them keep their children healthy during critical periods of growth and development.
For the County Correctional Health Services a dietitian reviews menus on a monthly basis to ensure that adequate nutritional guidelines are met for even those who are negligent of the law. Also serving those who are otherwise unable to make appropriate decisions, a dietitian consults on a regular basis with the Sacramento County Mental Health Treatment Center (SMHTC) assisting their residents with meeting their MNT requirements.
Dietitians also actively participate in the medical care of a number of the County’s patients who qualify for the County Medically Indigent Services Program (CMISP). They guide patients on making necessary changes to treat diabetes, high cholesterol, hypertension and obesity. For more information on these programs contact The Behavioral Education Self-Management and Risk Reduction Through Education (Be SMART) Program at (916) 874-9664 or (916) 875-0041 or at the link below.
Along with health educators, County dietitians target a broad range of Sacramento’s population through group presentations and health fairs. This MNT effort, given to underserved and underrepresented populations in Sacramento County, emphasizes disease prevention through good nutrition and exercise.
