The Special Assault and Forensic Evaluation (SAFE) Center (formerly the Sacramento County Multi-Disciplinary Interview Center) was established in 1991 to help children and dependent adults who are suspected victims of sexual or physical abuse.
To obtain facts about a case it is necessary to interview the victims. The goal of the SAFE Center is to reduce the trauma of being questioned and make the interview as gentle a process as possible. We do this by reducing the number of interviews needed, by holding the interviews in a friendly setting and using trained professionals known as forensic interviewers to ask the questions. A team approach to the interview and investigation ensures the best results for all involved.
Between 400 and 600 interviews take place each year in the facility and more than 7,000 interviews have been conducted since it opened in 1991. We have expanded to include children who have witnessed a crime and dependent adults who have been abused.
The SAFE Center is a member of the National Children’s Alliance, which provides support to child advocacy centers across the nation.
Mission Statement
The mission of the SAFE Center is to provide a team approach to the investigation and treatment for child victims and their families in a supportive, safe environment.
